There are many different ways cybercriminals are able to intercept your operating system. DNS is a critical part of your internet infrastructure. There are generally two types of attacks – availability attacks such as DDoS or integrity attacks such as MITM or cache poisoning. Malware attacks against DNS servers by cybercriminals are unfortunately very common. The first step when you are suspecting such an attack is to run an antivirus program because malware can attack your computer in a way that changes the DNS settings.

The objective of a DDoS (Distributive Denial of Service) attack is the denial of service of the DNS system, meaning the attacker is trying to take your DNS server offline with malware. Under normal operation, your DNS will received lots of server requests and respond without difficulty to the volume of queries. Under DDoS, your DNS is being flooded with a high number of malicious traffic with the objective of taking down the DNS. Either, the DNS server will be so busy it will take a long time to respond to all queries, or it crashes completely.
